Historic Romania

14 days/11 nights - from $2,595 per person including airfare from New York City
Take an 11-night escorted coach tour to the southeastern Europe country of Romania, the birthplace of the legend of Dracula. First, you will spend a night in Bucharest, the capital city, where you will visit its iconic landmarks. Then you will spend five more nights in medieval villages of Transylvania. Return to Bucharest for a night, before beginning a three-night Danube Delta trip. Finally, return to Bucharest for another night before your flight back to the US. Among the many features of your tour, visit Bucovina, which features unique painted monasteries that belong to the UNESCO World Heritage; the famous medieval castle (“Dracula’s Castle”); and Peles Castle, an exquisite piece of architecture that is one of Europe’s most spectacular castles. Land and air from New York City, starting at $2,595 per person based on double occupancy.

Day 1 – New York City/Bucharest
Depart New York City via late-night TAP Portugal flight to Bucharest via Lisbon.

Day 2 – Lisbon/Bucharest
Arrive in Lisbon, and connect with your flight to Bucharest.

Day 3 – Bucharest
Arrive and check in to your hotel. (Novotel or similar) (D)

Day 4 – Bucharest/Curtea de Arges/Sibiu/Sibiel
After breakfast, depart for tour to Curtea de Arges, former capital of Wallachia. Visit the Episcopal Church where the Romanian kings are buried. Drive along the picturesque Olt Valley to Sibiu, one of the oldest cities in Transylvania - formerly Hermannstadt - founded by the Saxon colonists. Guided walking tour of the medieval town includes the Main Square, the Evangelical Church, and the Liars' Bridge. Depart for Sibiel, where you visit the Museum of Icons. Overnight in Sibiel. Day 5 – Sibiel/Sighisoara/Targu Mures/Bistrita
Morning, departur to Sighisoara, birthplace of Vlad the Impaler. En route, visit the fortified Church at Biertan, a Gothic and Renaissance building that is one of the most beautiful in Romania. Arrive at Sighisoara and discover the medieval Citadel (a UNESCO World Heritage site), the Clock Tower; the Church on the Hill, and the roofed stairways. After lunch, continue to Targu Mures, with a walking tour through the city center, known for its architecture (the Palace of Culture, the Orthodox churches, and the Teleki-Bolyai Library). Drive on to Bistrita, one of the seven medieval cities in Transylvania and the place where Jonathan Harker, Bram Stoker’s hero spent the night before arriving at Dracula’s Castle.(Coroana de Aur or similar) (B/L/D)

Day 6 – Bistrita/Campulung/Moldovenesc/Moldovita/Sucevita/Gura/Himorului
Depart for Bucovina, the “upper land,” which features unique painted monasteries that belong to the UNESCO World Heritage. After crossing the land of Dracula, arrive at Campulung Moldovenesc and visit the Wooden Art Museum. After lunch, visit the Moldovita Monastery, a medieval art treasure. Visit the workshop of Lucia Condrea, the famous creator of painted eggs, and the village of Vatra Moldovitei, with its traditional small houses, old steam train, and unspoiled nature. Day 7 – Sucevita/Gura Humorului/Voronet/Lacu Rosu
Today, visit Bucovina’s Voronet Monastery, the jewel of Bucovina, known as “the Sistine Chapel of the East.” Continue the drive through the Moldavian villages, with their typical houses. Arrive at the Village of Tarpesti, home of the “Neculai Popa” Museum. Afterward, visit the monasteries Varatec and Agapia. After lunch, cross the Bicaz Gorges on foot, weather permitting. Arrive at Lacu Rosu (the Red Lake) resort for a typical Romanian “gulas” dinner. (Lacu Rosu or similar) (B/L/D)

Day 8 – Lacu Rosu/Prejmer/Bran/Brasov
This morning, depart for Brasov, driving through the Eastern Carpathians. Stop at Prejmer for a visit to the fortified church, another World Heritage site. After lunch, continue to Bran and visit the famous medieval castle (the Dracula's Castle) built as a fortress for the citizens of Brasov in 1377 as a defense to the city. Arrive at Brasov, former Kronstadt, founded by the Saxon colonists as the south gate of Transylvania. Walking tour through the old town center includes the Black Church, the biggest Gothic church between Istanbul and Vienna. (Coroana Brasovului) (B/L) 

Day 9 – Brasov/Sinaia/Bucharest
In the morning, cross the Carpathians toward Sinaia, a scenic mountain resort known as the “pearl of the Carpathians.” Visit Peles Castle, an exquisite piece of architecture that is one of Europe’s most spectacular castles. On a panoramic tour of Bucharest, visit the House of Parliament, Europe’s largest building, and take a walking tour in the Old City center. (Novotel or similara) (B/L/D)

Day 10 – Bucharest/Danube Delta
Early morning, depart for Tulcea. After lunch, visit the Danube Delta Museum, before departing by boat to Crisan/Sulina. Check into to your accommodations in the area, where you have a traditional fish meal. B/L/D)

Day 11 -  Danube Delta
After breakfast, depart for the south lakes of Sulina to enjoy the Danube Delta. After a three-hour journey, return to Sulina for lunch. Afternoon, visit the town, museum,  old churches and the cemetery. See the picturesque Sulina beach and seaside where the water is not salty, and have a few hours at leisure. Return after sunset and have a traditional dinner, based on fresh fish. Route is decided each day by the guide, depending on water levels of the Danube and the weather. (B/L/D)

Day 12 -  Danube Delta
After breakfast, we will depart again on water. Travel to Letea Village, with many traditional houses, by boat, going through the Golf of Musura to see K Island, the newest land in Romania and a paradise for birds. Arrive at a point for traveling by safari car to Letea Forest, the northernmost subtropical forest in Europe. See and photograph local attractions, including the famous wild horses, walk in the fine sand and head back to the boat and to Crisan/Sulina. Visit a local farm where lunch is prepared by your hosts at  and visit to scenic local farm in Cardon. Evening farewell dinner. (B/L/D)

Day 13 – Danube Delta/Bucharest
Early or packed breakfast before departing for Tulcea. Transfer to Bucharest and check in to your hotel. (Novotel or similar) (B)

Day 14 – Bucharest/New York City
Early morning transfer to the airport for your return flight to the US via TAP Portugal. (B)
